Why do we have rules in Sport?

Sports have rules so everyone can play fair and there can be a winner and (sadly) a loser.

Not to mention, without rules, there could be no sports at all! Without rules, the games would have no structure. One team could decide a try is worth 10 points, while another could decide forward passes are legal in rugby.
Sports have rules to know what is right & what is wrong.
Without rules it would be impossible to play sport.
As a great sportsman once said, "if sport is body then rules are soul, without soul it's difficullt to survive."

There are two types of rules Universal and Specific.
Universal are the general rules which are displayed in every game e.g. take care of each memeber of your team.
A specific rule would be, you have to hit the tennis ball inside the white lines.

I know everyone plays a sport in this room. However, we dont all play the same sport therefore there will be different rules and regulations for different sports.

For example in soccer you are allowed to kick the ball but cannot touch the ball with your hands.Whereas with rugby your allowed to touch the ball with both your hands and your feet without getting penalised.

Your Task:

Choose a your favourite sport out of Netball, Soccer, Rugby, Tennis and Hockey.

You will notice the different research stations around the room e.g. books, computers and newspaper articles.
This is a helpful resource: http://www.topendsports.com/resources/rules/index.htm

Your mission is to go out, research and list the rules of your particular sport you have chosen.
The rules must be both universal(common understanding) and specfic.
Each student will be given an A3 piece of paper. They will fold this in half and on the left side they will write up the Universal andSpecific rules and on the right side they must write up Why they are relevant/important. For example in Basketball, the ball is thrown up in the air between two players so each team has an equal chance in winning the ball.
